Do you truly love your work? Do you think that such a thing is in fact possible? Or do you take the view that work is just something that has to be done as painlessly as possible, counting off the days remaining towards retirement, and that "real life" is something that takes place outside of work…. unless one happens to be lucky enough to win the lottery, in which case you can pack it all in and just live a life of leisure and pleasure? Actually, it’s well documented that many lottery winners suffer from depression and disillusionment, but of course "that wouldn’t happen to me"…….

While a vocational lifestyle might be best found outside of work (paid or unpaid), for most of us work is both a necessity and also, probably, apart from child-rearing or other forms of caring (a vocation for some), the one single activity that takes up most of our time and energy in life. With both these facts in mind, work is also meant to be a source of pleasure, satisfaction and deep personal fulfilment. Do you agree?

I can help you to create your ideal lifestyle or vocation by looking into, developing and magnifying 4 key areas of life experience:

  1. Self-Awareness & Knowledge. This can include recognising what already gives you the most pleasure & satisfaction in life, identifying core values, skills & aspirations, focussing on ideal work circumstances, style& environment and a realistic appraisal of personal strengths & weaknesses.
  2. Identification of Need. Of course work is usually linked to income, although this is not the only need that it meets. Other benefits that work can ideally provide include social contacts, personal challenges (together with the joy that comes from rising to these) and, most importantly, the sense of personal fulfilment that comes from realising ones potential.
  3. A Positive Mind-Set. How often do we say "I’d love to do this or that…BUT….."? Hidden within that little word ´but´ may be a whole series of self-created mental & emotional obstacles to our living the life that we truly desire and are capable of. Conversely there may also be real practical challenges that life coaching can address.
  4. The Ability to Visualise Success. For some, ´success´ is dependent on the ability to clearly identify & follow a route from here to there, while for others it is measured by the ability to let go of personal preferences, cultivate trust and allow the unknown to steer us towards an unforeseen destination.

What would you most like to get from life coaching?

Please just take a few moments to try and put your answer to this question into thought... words, pictures etc.

Thats just a little exercise.. most times, lots of us never fully recognise what we truly want and how to get what we want. Yet it is central not only to the whole process of life coaching, but life itself. Many people feel that life is somehow lacking something, not quite working right and needs to be fixed in some way. The first step to solving any sort of a problem is to see it for what it really is. What I do as a life coach is guide you to look at yourself in a way that enables you to discover within yourself the solutions to these problems; solutions that definitely work.

I’ve been a "person worker" all my life; variously as warden of homelessness hostel, youth worker, community worker, special school teacher, social worker, academic study skill coach, dyslexia tutor plus recognised training qualifications in reiki healing, hypnotherapy, life coaching. The main thing that I have learned through all of this is that the quality of our life is determined by the way that we think about ourselves; the "story in the mind" that we carry about who we are and our place within the scheme of things. Change this and our life changes, to become more expressive of who we really are; inevitably happier, more fulfilling and beneficial to both ourselves and others.

If you feel that you might like to work with me, then the first step is an initial meeting. This meeting is completely free of charge and can take place by e-mail, skype, telephone or a meeting in a public space (café, restaurant, etc.). If after this both you and I wish to proceed further, then subsequent fees are completely negotiable and might include an element of barter or skills/goods exchange.

Please feel free to CONTACT me.

There is nothing "wrong" with you....

Yes you might experience a range of difficulties, but after many years professionally & personally supporting dyslexic adults & children in a variety of roles, I have come to realise that what is even more striking is that those same people often also possess a range of special and unique cognitive abilities; particular types or ´styles´ of thinking that, when integrated into the personality, are associated with high intelligence & ability. In fact, when dyslexia was first identified and named at the beginning of the twentieth century, it was this unusual combination of high intelligence and low literacy skill that was the defining feature.

When we think of dyslexia, we tend to perhaps think of problems with spelling & punctuation, or maybe organising oneself, time management, perhaps perceived memory difficulties or reading fluency… In fact a range of what we might call ´cognitive tasks´ usually associated in some way with words and language… and often associated with the ways that we traditionally measure academic attainment; exams, memory, essays, doing well at school, etc.. For this reason, due to relative failure with these kinds of tasks, many dyslexics carry around a burden of feeling themselves to be in some way inferior to others. However, for all the difficulties that dyslexia can create for an individual in the modern world, many dyslexic individuals also display very specific ways of thinking that are regarded as creative, innovative, or ´thinking outside the box´; leading to high achievement and recognised excellence.

There is no consensus as to what dyslexia precisely is, its causes or even whether or not ´it´ actually exists at all. Certainly it tends to be different and unique within every individual.

The benefits to you of working with me include:-

  • Insight into your individual uniqueness
  • Simple strategies for minimising the difficulties associated with dyslexia.
  • Awareness of personal cognitive strengths for individual well-being and success in life.

Academic success in Higher and Further Education can be more dependent on "technique" rather than innate intelligence or prior school experience. I promote and support the effective development of a range of specific study skills, any or all of which can lead to mastering the ´academic game´, ensuring academic & emotional resilience and getting better marks. These skills include:

  • Essay Planning & Structuring
  • Editing & Proofreading
  • Time Management
  • Reading and Research Techniques
  • Information Organisation
  • Critical Thinking
  • Effective Note-Taking
  • Exam Preparation, Revision and Technique
  • Memory Strategies
  • Academic Resilience
  • Emotional & Psychological Self-management
  • Referencing
  • Use of Assistive Software
  • Stress Management

Substantially experienced up to and including PhD level.

Vocation

Do you....

..look forward to going to work?.. ..don't want to do anything different?.. ...know beyond any doubt that you are doing the right thing for you?...

Dyslexia

You may have been told otherwise, but dyslexia is not in itself a "disorder", rather a specific style or type of thinking that is actually much better for some cognitive tasks.. but not so good for others...

Study Skills

Academic Study Skills

Academic success in Higher and Further Education can be more dependent on "technique" rather than anything else.
